2009 Total Offense Rank (yards per game): 45
2009 Total Defense Rank (yards per game): 29

The Miami Hurricanes are hoping 2010 will be the year they return to national prominence. The five time national champion returns most of its key players after having a nine win season in 2009. Head Coach Randy Shannon just got a new contract extension and the school hopes he can continue to build on what he started.

There is a lot of talk in Coral Gables about a possible Heisman trophy for quarterback Jacory Harris. Last season he threw for over 3,300 yards and 24 touchdowns but also 17 interceptions, second most in the nation. The Canes think offseason thumb surgery will help his accuracy and limit turnovers this year. He has a deep group of receivers, led by senior Leonard Hankerson. Harris spread the ball around well last year, with seven receivers having over 200 yards receiving. The loss of tight end Jimmy Graham puts into question how much production will come from that position. Richard Gordon, the most experienced tight end, has only four career catches.

Miami will use the running game heavily to provide balance for Harris. Graig Cooper will miss at least part of the season from an injury suffered in last year’s bowl game, so Damien Berry will be the starter. He had an impressive 6.6 yards per carry, and has quality backups in Mike James and Lamar Miller. The offensive line is an area of concern, ranking 100th in sacks allowed, that must improve for the Canes to be successful.

All ACC junior cornerback Brandon Harris headlines the defense after the loss of middle linebacker Darryl Sharpton. The rest of the secondary is very solid and will be a strength of the team. The defensive line is extremely deep. Defensive end Allen Bailey returns after he led the team in sacks. Linebacker Sean Spence will try to regain his ACC defensive rookie of the year form in 2008, but the bigger question is who will take over the middle spot vacated by Sharpton?

The Hurricanes could be on the brink of a championship season. They have a balanced attack and a solid defense. Jacory Harris is the key to the season though. As he goes, so will the Hurricanes.

Miami’s odds to win the ACC: +250.

Miami Hurricanes 2010-2011 Season Preview

The Miami Hurricanes dominated at the beginning of the decade.

Ken Dorsey (2000 – 2002)

Everyone remembers Kosar, Testaverde, and Kelly as the premiere Canes’ quarterbacks, but what about Dorsey? Sure he looked like he ate a pretzel a day and then never made it big in the NFL, but you cannot ignore the facts. He played in two national championships, winning one and losing the other on the worst called penalty in the history of football. He passed for 8,758 yards. 76 touchdowns, and posted an absurd 38-2 record during his three years as starter. Who cares if he couldn’t sling the ball on a rope sixty yards down field. Dorsey was a gamer, a pure winner.

Willis McGahee

This was brutal choice. My main argument is this: Nobody put more fear into a defense than McGahee did during the 2002 season when he rushed for 1,753 yards (6.2 avg),  28 touchdowns, and had eight 100-yard games (All Hurricane records). Every time he touched the ball he was a threat to go the distance due to his rare combination of strength and explosiveness. If he didn’t get his knee shredded like a block of cheese in the 2002 National Championship, he might be the best back in the NFL today.

Edgerrin James

Edgerrin James was dominant for multiple seasons in Coral Gables, as he was the only Canes back to have two consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus rushing yards, and he ranks first in school history with the most 100-yard rushing games (14). He also still holds the record for rushing yards in a game with 299, which has a good chance of never being broken.

Alonzo Highsmith (1984 – 1986)

The father to current Miami backup QB A.J. Highsmith was a 235 pound bull for the old school, fatigue-clad Canes. He won a national title in 2003 over Nebraska.

Michael Irvin (1984 – 1987) Irvin finished his career at “The U” with 143 receptions, 2,423 yards and 26 touchdowns(Best all time). He was known for his flash just as much as his playmaking ability and goes down as one of the greatest Canes ever.

Moss was lightning during his days at the U

Santana Moss (1997 – 2000) Moss narrowly edges out Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne because he was the total package. The former walk-on graduated as the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards (2,546), punt return yards (1,196), and all-purpose yards (4,394). He was as dangerous in the return game as anyone in the history of college football and was a threat to take it to the house any time he touched the rock.

Jeremy Shockey (2000 – 2001) Shock was a critical part of the 2001 National Championship team, one of the best teams in the history of college football. He possessed the unique mix of size and speed to beat any matchup the defense threw at him.

Bryant McKinnie (2000 – 2001)

Leon Searcy (1988 – 1991)

Chris Myers (2001 – 2003)

Martin Bibla (1998 – 2001)

Jim Otto (1957-1959)

Devin Hester (2004-2005) The fastest man in Miami Hurricane history with six career touchdowns off returns. He never really fit in on either side of the ball, but his role as a dominant force in the return game made him a game changer. He goes down as one of the most dangerous players in college football history.

Unpopular: Manchester United's all-conquering outfit of 1999 are one of the finest to have been assembled

Put your head above the parapet and sure enough someone will take fire at you, even if the reason that you're standing out is based merely on the success you have achieved.

Manchester United have been England's landmark side for more than 60 years, spreading their devilish red tentacles to all four corners of the globe.

As a result they have been stared down by more than their fair share of green-eyed haters.

But not only are opposing fans jealous of the 18-time top flight title winners, they also appear to have manifested a hatred of all things Old Trafford.

According to Sports Illustrated magazine, it is United's 1999 treble winners whom are the most disliked of their many triumphant incarnations, coming in as they do at No 10 on a survey of most hated sport teams.

Sir Alex Ferguson's all-conquering side are the only 'soccer' team to make an appearance on the list, nestling in the top 10 just ahead of the 1990 University of Miami [American] football side.

The magazine claims the manner of United's victory on that famous night in Barcelona merely intensified the feeling of disdain, coming as it did with two goals in stoppage time against a dominant Bayern Munich.

United's position on the Top 25 list seems out of place.

Joining them, and bizarrely eight places below, are the 1976 Germanwomen's Olympic swim team who romped to victory in 11 of the 13 racesonly to later be found guilty of excessive doping offences.

High tension: The drama of the 1972 Olympic men's basketball final still sits badly with the American public

Elsewhere, the 1986 New York Mets baseball side, complete with the self-titled 'the Scum Bunch' (Jesse Orosco, Danny Heep, Doug Sisk), make an appearance, as do the 1972 Soviet Union Olympic basketball team for their controversial triumph over the US in the Munich final.

But topping the pile are University of Miami football team from 24 years ago. According to Sports Illustrated, the 1986 Hurricanes were caught up in 'fights and fraud and alleged shoplifting and other unsavory shenanigans involving more than 40 players.'

And to think, all United did was be better than everybody else!

"Manchester United have been England's landmark side for more than 60 years,..."

Eh, where were they in the 70's and 80's and weren't they even memorably relegated by one of their own at the end of the '74 season.

Make that 60 a 20 perhaps and keep it realistic.

Online bettors have done well with poker thanks to the top poker betting systems, still the most money is to be made In college football betting

2010 looks like it will be a strange year for college football betting. The most decorated player in college history, Tim Tebow, is gone. USC is suspended from the playoffs. Multiple teams are about to change conferences.

Thankfully we have a conference like the ACC, which is one of the few conferences that should play out normally. Heres my breakdown for 2010 featuring only the top contenders.

BOSTON COLLEGE (8 to 1)

The Eagles arent the flashiest team in the conference but theres reason for optimism in Beantown. Montel Harris could be poised for a big senior season as he tries to up his NFL draft stock. Boston College also plays strong defense; it was 19th in the nation in scoring defense last year.

CLEMSON (12 to 1)

The Tigers are one of the riskiest but most fascinating picks in the ACC. They have a potentially elite quarterback in Kyle Parker, who threw 20 touchdown passes versus 12 picks as a freshman. Unfortunately, hes such a good athlete that the Colorado Rockies drafted him to play baseball for them this past spring. As of press time, he was still undecided. Do you wait until he returns before you make your bet or do you try to get better value while you can and cross your fingers?

FLORIDA STATE (31 to 10)

The Seminoles are the safe pick to win the ACC, but they dont get the full endorsement yet from the sports audio shows. Its true that the offense looks very promising. Christian Ponder is a senior now and he has a veteran O-line protecting him. But Im not totally sold on the defense. The secondary in particular looks like itll be suspect now that Patrick Robinson is gone.

GEORGIA TECH (10 to 1)

The multiple-option offense will sway some bettors but entertaining football isnt always winning football. The Yellow Jackets probably dont play good enough defense to really contend in the ACC. They also lost high-impact players on both sides of the ball Jonathan Dwyer on offense, Derrick Morgan on defense to the NFL.

MIAMI (5 to 2)

Are the Miami Hurricanes ready to take the next step? Jacory Harris made major strides last season and, if he carries his improvements into 2010, could make Miami the most balanced team in the conference. The Canes play great defense and that goes a long way in a conference filled with suspect units.

NORTH CAROLINA (5 to 1)

Could the Tar Heels sneak up on everyone this year? They join Miami as one of the only ACC teams that plays strong D. More importantly, they return a whopping 18 starters nine on offense, nine on defense. Its not insane to consider North Carolina a legit sleeper.

VIRGINIA TECH (9 to 4)

Virginia Tech, like many other ACC teams, has a promising offense but suspect D. Ryan Williams should help them put plenty of points on the board, and VT certainly looked strong down the stretch last year, but how can a defense that returns only three starters keep opponents off the board?

Todays free pick

I think Harris showed last year that he can be as strong as any pivot in the ACC; he threw for 24 scores in 13 games. If he can cut down on his turnovers, Miami should win the ACC, as its stellar D will back the offense up.

Sports Illustrated has come up with what it considers to be the Top 25 Most Hated Teams of all time in sports, and the 2007 Pats, the team that nearly ran the table without a loss before coming up short in the Super Bowl, finished No. 6 on the list.

This is some of what Lee Jenkins wrote in the description of the Pats: ”They were the NFL’s Miss Manners, with delicate sensibilities that could be offended by the most innocuous sources, from a kicker like Mike Vanderjagt to a third receiver such as Freddie Mitchell. Any press-conference comment, no matter how mundane, prompted charges of disrespect. When former Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer mentioned after a game that the Patriots were hampered by injuries (Tedy Bruschi was recovering from a stroke at the time), Tom Brady emerged from his protective casing and barked: “You don’t talk about our team.”Earning the distinction as the most hated, was the 1986 University of Miami team coached by Jimmy Johnson. The Road Game Journal feature will detail our excursions to various Miami Hurricanes road games over the years.  Hide the children, because when you wear orange and green to an opposing team’s stadium, well, they tend to not take to it kindly.   The below article details our trip to Philadelphia to see the 2000 Hurricanes take on the Temple Owls (no, that is not a typo).

Miami 45, Temple 17 (2000, Philadelphia, PA): Dude, don’t ask me why I went to this game.  I have a buddy who lives in Philly and had always been meaning to visit him so figured, hey, why not schedule it during a time when the Canes are playing?  So, that’s what I did.  Besides, I was still on a natural high from the Wide Right III win a couple weeks back.  I didn’t expect such gut wrenching euphoria this time, but I figured I’d get a chance to see some of the younger guys in action to see what’s in store for 2001 and 2002.

We get to the old Vet, and it’s a ghost town.  Is a game going on today?  Sure enough, there is.  We didn’t have tickets, so we just got some from some scalpers for 10 bucks each. Later that night I was at a party and some dude was like, “Oh man, why didn’t you tell me you were goin to that game, I have a stack of like 20 tickets at home that went unused.”  Hahaaa.  I guess Temple is not much of a draw in Philly.  The good part is that we were able to mosey on down close to the field since the stadium was practically empty.  It’s kind of weird being in a huge stadium that is like 15% full.  I look over in the section next to me and there is Dan Stubbs, member of the 1987 national championship team.  As for the game, well, it was a yawner but it was cool to see.  No real concern about the outcome like in Wide Right III so you can just kick back, relax, and watch your team roll over this poor excuse for a Division I-A squad.  During one drive, Dorsey threw a picture perfect fade into the end zone.  He released it before the WR (Santana?) broke and it was a dart right on the money.  After that throw, I was like ‘Arm strength? Who says Ken doesn’t have arm strength’ and I thought he’d make it in the pros.  Eh, guess I was wrong.  But, that was a niiiice throw.  My buddy wanted to head out at halftime, but I made him stick it out.  He wasn’t that entertained, but as a Canes fan, you want to see the young guys get in their late to see what’s in store for years ahead.

The entire stadium was virtually silent the whole game.  I literally could have yelled out “Hey Reggie!” and Mr. Wayne would have turned around.  This game remains the only road game mismatch I’ve attended (as most people do, I usually attend the more high profile match ups).  But, there’s something endearing about seeing your team on the road against a real crappy opponent.  You get to see them in a more intimate environment and if you’re a true die hard Canes fan, you get to see most of the back ups and reserves get playing time.  As an added bonus, you don’t have to deal with 80,000+ drunken irate fans hurling expletives at you.  Of course, this requires the program to be on an elite level, as it was in 2000.   There is so much parity in college football these days.  Rutgers, Boise State and TCU are catching up to the powerhouses of old.  I think this stems from a larger pool of talented high school players across the country.  The big schools only have so many scholarships to offer and once those are doled out, there’s still plenty of elite talent remaining for the smaller schools (more so than there were in the ’70s and ’80s).  That being said, there always seems to be a different kind of speed and talent produced in South Florida and it’s just a matter of time before the Hurricanes return to the glory days like this game vs. Temple in 2000.  At least, I hope so.

Canes Pundit >> Road Game Journal – 2000 Miami Hurricanes (45) v ...

Miami will host Notre Dame at Sun Life Stadium on November 25, 2017.

The University of Miami and the University of Notre Dame have officially come to an agreement on the dates and sites of a future three-game football series between the schools.

The series will open with a neutral-site game at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Game two of the series is scheduled four years later, with the Hurricanes traveling to South Bend, Indiana, to face the Fighting Irish on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Notre Dame Stadium. The final game of the contract will be played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

“I am excited to announce that the University of Miami has renewed its historic football rivalry with the University of Notre Dame,” UM Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “Not only is it an outstanding opportunity for both programs, but it is great for the sport of college football.”

The last time the two teams met in Miami, the Hurricanes cruised to a 27-10 win over Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl in 1989. Three of Miami’s wins over Notre Dame came during the regular season of the Hurricanes’ 1983, 1987, and 1989 national championship years. Notre Dame leads the all-time series between the two schools, 15-7-1.

Miami and Notre Dame recently made national headlines when it was announced the two programs would share the American Football Coaches Association’s 2009 Academic Achievement Award, as both schools recorded a 100 percent graduation rate for members of its freshman football student-athlete class of 2002.
